if it’s not one thing….
we are slowly recovering from our zombie infection. but now poppy is teething–which means, he spends as much time attached to my nipple as i can endure…and then some. which means i don’t get much sleep. if you have ever tried to sleep while someone incessantly sucks at your nipple…. i can’t do it. eventually i get tired enough to fall asleep while he comforts his teething by nursing off my tender nipples, but i have to be pretty damn exhausted to do so. if i don’t nurse him, he screams and gives me the stinkeye until i give in and nurse him again. motherhood is so much like being captured, imprisoned, and tortured by the enemy camp. yay motherhood.
i’m pretty damn exhausted…maybe a bit bitter.
i did manage to do thumbnail sketches of the next two pages. i was going to go straight into the woods with moses & the gang, but then i got to thinking about the others who were watching her march off into zombie-infested woods with her kids in tow. then i started writing that. so that will be the next two pages. plus! i practiced my katana drawings a bit. however, fidgit told me they still don’t look right and would not stop criticizing them. so dusty told him how the japanese used to test out new katanas. yikes. poor fidgit is going to have nightmares for a week. though he traumatized fidgit in the doing, it was kind of sweet of dusty to defend my katana sketches. he suggested i should do a story about how she got her katana. i replied, “well, dusty gave it to her, of course.”
one night, just before passing out around ten pm, i did manage to do some layout for my pages. i am hoping that later today i will get a chance to ink in my first draft of at least one of the pages. i usually update my tapastic page on sunday or monday. i am all caught up so that i cannot update it until page 30 is done. it might take a miracle to get a new page up by monday. new page on monday…is that a duran duran song?
i thought it would be neat to put up what can be called my first draft before i draw my comic. i write out the story. figure out how i want the text broken up. then i put it on paper. this is what the writing out looks like. i also use this sheet to check the darkness of my ink. and for this page, i actually did a thumbnail sketch–which worked out nicely. i think i will keep that up. i doodled moses’s tattoo on here as well. mostly, my process is sitting & staring & waiting for inspiration. usually while watching the daily show or arrested development. things will appear in my head as i sits and as i thinks. inspiration, if you will.
failing that, i will lay down & nurse a baby–then inspiration is sure to strike.
as you can see. i don’t do much for a first draft. i prefer the raw look of my comic. if i draw the lines too neatly on the first inking, i go back after the second inking and scratch it up a bit.
i was going to post the previous page of writings & doodlings as well, but my toddler peed on it when i left it laying on the floor for too long.
just another old person with animal parts. i will run out of these soon. i am saving my favorites for last. meanwhile, i do know what happens on the next page of moses jones but have not had a chance to write it down or do a preliminary sketch to figure page layout, etc. hopefully tonight! being an overtime mom & a halftime student really puts limits on one’s time & energy. trust me, you don’t have to try it yourself–unless you are so inclined.
mama/artist/student…not for the timid nor the weak of heart!
but i love it.
again, if anyone wants to be my benefactor so i can hire a personal assistant & get more art produced, i would not be too proud to take help.
here is my kudu horned fella. he looks very devilish, but that wasn’t necessarily the intent.
i wondered while i was doing this project if the old people were morphing towards their next life or if the animal bits were symbolic of the naturalness of aging…or if their animal nature became more exposed with age…. hmmm…might make a good comic…..
